Pruning

Pruning > Crown Reduction

Crown reduction reduces a tree’s crown while still maintaining its natural shape and balance as far as is practicable.

This is different to ‘topping’, which is not acceptable. Topping is rarely appropriate as it not only disfigures most species, but also can have a detrimental effect on the tree's health and is therefore not encouraged. No more than one third of the total foliage should be removed in the case of broadleaved trees. The ends of the branches are removed back to internal lateral branches.
